What is the best free antivirus,firewall,scans,popup blockers,phishing and hacker protection, and anything?
else you need to be safe on the Internet and software that cleans up our computer if has a virus or something like that.
I agree with Dianna C about the free version of SuperAntiSpyware. The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn’t remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It’s strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It’s tough to say which is best. I haven’t seen any recent stats. SpywareBlaster is free; however, I only use the “static” ActiveX protection. Microsoft Windows Defender real-time protection is ok, but I don’t know of any other free real-time protection products that are really good (sorry, I don’t like Spybot’s tea timer). The pop-up blockers that come with the browser are sufficient. However, they can not prevent all pop-ups. It’s difficult for a pop-up blocker to catch everything because you run the risk of blocking a legitimate web page. I don’t use Yahoo games, so I block Java. Blocking Java prevents pop-up applets that use Java. I don’t pretend to know everything and the above information is purely my own personal opinion.

Added:
Buggs mentioned Ccleaner and it is a good free utility. I have used it for almost 2 years. Also, Buggs is right on with Norton. It is a resource hog. However, I stopped using and recommending any Symantec/Norton Security suite software because of problems with new Service Packs and it breaks other vendor software. Symantec support has improved dramatically over the last few years but they are slow to fixing their own bugs.
