Many parents know that they should have some type of parental control over their children’s Internet usage, but there is a lot of confusion over how to maintain control.
Invading a Child’s Privacy
Many children today have their own computers in their bedrooms. And parents are often uncomfortable with the idea of looking at what their child is doing online – chatting with friends over instant messaging, blogging, MySpace, Facebook, games they are playing . . . it’s a whole world they have entered and most parents are not there to watch over them or even provide basic guidance.
The question is to whether even allow it to become an issue of privacy. Think about it for a moment. When a young child or even a teenager walk out the door and you ask them where they are going, do you consider that an invasion of their privacy? Of course not. You are their parent! You are supposed to know where they are, who they are spending their time with. You are supposed to be making judgements about what is right and wrong. If you heard about a 10 year old telling his parent he is off to see an x-rated movie, what would you think? Well, it’s no different if your 10 year old is sitting in his room watching an x-rated youtube video. It’s not about privacy.
The Challenge
Many children are more computer savvy than their parents and know it. Some will take advantage of the fact. So while you may know how to look at their Internet browser history, they already may know how to delete the history. Some children may even be using administrator passwords to keep you off of their computer completely. For many reasons, that should be a steadfast rule – no password protecting computers – unless you know their password. Also in the case of chat, if a child wants to be sure that you can’t enter the computer to see the chat history, they will set the settings to delete the conversations. And when it comes to forums and activity on websites, it can be near impossible for you to really know what they are doing there.
A Few of the Risks
A lot of parents wonder if there really is a significant risk. Today, most children have it well ingrained not to talk to strangers online and not to release personal information to someone they don’t know personally. But even so, there are still a constant flow of incidents involving pedophiles reaching out to unsuspecting minors on the Internet. Furthermore, consider some of these potential problems, that are growing and touching countless families every day:
1. Pro-anorexia sites are one of the fastest growing kinds of websites. Teenage girls support one another in their efforts to lose weight. They have turned hiding their disorder into a science by sharing tips and tricks with one another and creating a virtual support network.
2. Teen gambling is a growing epidemic made popular by the 24/7 availability of Internet gambling sites. With no real capability to check a user’s age, the gambling sites allow anyone to place bets. Given the fact that the compulsive disorders are more likely among those who are exposed at a young age, teen gamblers are much more likely to become problem gamblers.
3. Porn addiction. There is a troubling denial about the extent to which children are being exposed to pornography online. And the adult content that they are accessing is not only the Playboy photos that children once found hidden in a closet. It is hardcore, disturbing images. This is not only about educating a child that it is wrong to look for such content online. They can not avoid it – whether it is via other children sending photos and videos to their classmates or via experienced pornographers who have figured out that by carefully constructing their websites, and designing them around non-pornographic themes, they gain new opportunities to deceive unsuspecting surfers. And why? Because a child exposed to porn is more likely to grow to be an adult addicted to porn, willing to become a paying customer.
4. Social Problems. As a child spends more and more time online, he naturally spends less time with friends, family and doing other offline activities. This can lead to weight gain due to a lack of activity as well as social problems. When a child spends too much time online and not enough in real social situations, he is risking not fully developing important social skills.
A Solution
Gaining insight and control of your child’s online life is crucial. A variety of tools exist. An excellent way to quickly get the needed insight to whether your child is using the Internet responsibly is a keylogger.
